Errors and limits

Every reply says what happened and what to do next. A lookup that finds nothing or cannot run costs nothing.

No match

The reply is "No match found for this lookup. No credit was used." Check the spelling of the address or the name, or try another form, such as the address instead of the name.

Ambiguous name

When more than one person matches a name, you get the candidates with their name and location only, no contacts, and nothing is charged.

Unsupported input and the one-form rule

A lookup takes exactly one form. A request that mixes forms, or misses a part of one, is refused before anything runs: "Send exactly one of: an address, a phone number, an email address, or a first and last name with a location. For property attributes, an owner check or nearby homes, set kind with an address." Other refusals name the missing part:

  • "A name alone is not a lookup. Add the address, or use first and last name with a city and state or a ZIP code."
  • "A person lookup needs a location: a city and state, or a ZIP code."
  • "That is not a US phone number with 10 digits."
  • "This address covers several units. Add the unit number and look it up again."
  • "This property is owned by a company, not a person, so person-level contacts are not available for it."
  • "Known phones and emails need the list option fill_missing set to true."
  • "A business lookup needs an address, or a business name with a city and state or a ZIP code."

Insufficient credits

If your credits are too few for a lookup or for the maximum cost of a list, nothing runs and nothing is charged. The reply says how many credits it needs and how many you have, with the link to your account page, where you buy more.

Limits

  • A list has at most 1,000 rows.
  • A single lookup returns at most 25 results; nearby homes default to 10.
  • A wrong-number report takes at most 50 numbers.
  • An account can make up to 300 Scout Data calls per hour; the reply says when to try again.
  • A list file link works for 24 hours.

US only

Scout Data covers people and homes in the United States. A phone number must be a US number with 10 digits.

Out of scope

The plugin looks up contacts, owners and home facts. It does not search building permits and does not draw maps or search areas on a map; ask for one address, person, phone number or email at a time, or run a list.

Temporary errors

If the service cannot answer, the reply is "The lookup could not be completed right now. Please try again shortly." Nothing is charged. Ask again in a moment.
