This page will not tell you how many dials it takes to set a solar appointment, because we do not know and neither does anyone publishing a figure. What it will do is show you the four rates the answer is made of, where each one lives in your own dispositions, and a calculator to multiply them. The number that comes out is yours, and it will be right.
The formula
An appointment is the survivor of a chain. A dial becomes a connect, a connect becomes a right-party conversation, a conversation becomes a set, a set becomes a held appointment. Each step keeps a fraction of what entered it, and the fractions multiply.
Dials per held appointment = 1 ÷ (connect rate × right-party rate × set rate × held rate)
Drop the last term and you have dials per set, which is the number most floors report and the one you should distrust — a set that never sits cost the same dials as one that did. Everything below assumes you want the held version, because that is the one that connects to revenue.
Where each rate comes from
All four are already in your dialer if your dispositions are designed so that one outcome maps to one code. If they are not, fix that first — outbound dialer setup has the seven-code minimum. Then:

The fourth column is the reason to keep the rates separate rather than reporting a single dials-to-appointment figure. Two of them belong to the data and the telephony, two to the people, and a blended number cannot tell you which half moved. The rep-hours figure is the one to carry into planning. Divide the appointments you need in a week by held appointments per rep-hour and you have a staffing number; multiply dials per held appointment by what a record costs you per dial and you have the data side of cost per appointment. Both are inputs to how to price a bought lead, which runs the rest of the way to what the chain can afford.
Why the rates multiply, and what that does to priorities
Because the terms are multiplied, a proportional change in any one of them produces the same proportional change in the result. Lifting the right-party rate by half does exactly as much for dials per appointment as lifting the set rate by half — and one of those is a purchasing decision while the other is months of coaching.
That is the practical use of the formula. Put your four rates side by side, find the one that is furthest below where the file or the floor should be able to run, and spend there. Floors usually discover that the rate they have been managing hardest — set rate, because it is the one that belongs to the reps in the room — is not the one with the most room in it.
The one sourced figure, and why it is not a phone number
We build a canvassing app, so the funnel we can measure from our own logs is the door, not the dialer. Across 237,329 logged door outcomes on 7,241 field days, derived from anonymised logs on 17 August 2026, reps marked 5.8% of knocks “Appointment Set” — one self-reported appointment per 17.2 doors, with someone answering 37.0% of the time.
We cite it here only to show the shape. A door is a fixed address that cannot be ported, screened or labelled spam, so the knock chain has no right-party term to speak of and a very different first term. Do not transfer 17.2 to a phone. What does transfer is the structure: a big drop at the first step, a smaller one at each step after, and a result that is far more sensitive to the top of the chain than to the pitch.
Three ways the number lies
- Counting records instead of attempts. A floor that divides appointments by unique records dialled reports a smaller, prettier number than one that counts every attempt. Both are valid; only one is a cost. Label which you are using and never compare across the two.
- Measuring sets and calling them appointments. If held rate is not in the chain, the number is a setter’s output, not the floor’s. The confirmation habits that move held rate are in solar appointment setting.
- Blending files. A fresh segment and a fourth-pass residue dialled in the same campaign produce a connect rate that describes neither. What to do with the result
Recompute weekly, per source. The absolute number matters less than its movement, and its movement is diagnostic only if you can see which of the four rates moved it. A rising dials-per-appointment figure with a stable set rate is a data or telephony problem; the same rise with stable connect and right-party rates is a floor problem. They are fixed by different people, and the whole value of the formula is that it tells you which one to call.

How many dials does it take to set a solar appointment?
Nobody can tell you that from outside your floor, and anyone who quotes a number without your rates is guessing. Dials per appointment is one divided by the product of four rates you already log — connect, right-party, set and held — and those four vary so much between files, caller-ID health and floors that a published average would describe nobody. Pull your own rates from a week of dispositions and multiply.
Should I count dials per set or dials per held appointment?
Held. A set that does not sit consumed the same dials and produced nothing, and a floor that reports dials per set is hiding its confirmation problem inside a flattering number. Track both if you like, but staff, budget and pay against held.
Does a redial count as a dial?
Yes, every attempt counts, because every attempt costs a rep-second and a caller-ID impression. The number you are computing is the cost of an appointment in floor time, and redials are floor time. If you want a per-record view as well, compute it separately and label it — the two answer different questions.
Which of the four rates is worth improving first?
Whichever is furthest from the others, because they multiply. A floor at a strong set rate and a poor right-party rate gains more from a better-matched file than from any coaching, and vice versa. The calculator on this page shows the effect of moving each one while the rest stay fixed.
