There is a specific pattern behind this search. Someone tries Intelius, finds the numbers stale or the export missing, moves to another people-search site, gets a similar result, and repeats. After the third attempt the reasonable conclusion is that the sites are all equally mediocre. The more useful conclusion is that several of them were never independent tests in the first place.
Disclosure: Scout Data is our product; treat that entry as a maker’s pitch and the rest as our honest read.
The ownership map nobody shows you
Intelius is operated by PeopleConnect, Inc., a privately held company acquired by H.I.G. Capital in 2015. PeopleConnect also operates TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate, US Search and Classmates. Those are distinct consumer brands with distinct sign-up flows, and they sit under one roof.
Two other names people group with Intelius are genuinely separate companies: BeenVerified is operated by The Lifetime Value Co., and Spokeo is independent of both. So the category has real competition in it — but a “try these five alternatives” list drawn without regard to ownership can easily hand you three variations of the thing you already rejected.
The practical rule: before you evaluate an alternative in this category, find out who operates it. If the answer is the same company, you are testing the interface, not the data.
What actually differs between brands, and what does not
- Usually differs: report layout, how much is teased before payment, subscription mechanics and cancellation flow, which add-ons are bundled.
- Usually does not differ much: the underlying public-record and aggregator sources, how recently a phone was observed, and whether a number is tied to the current owner of a property rather than to a former resident.
That second list is the one that decides whether your reps have conversations. It is also the one the marketing pages say least about, because it is genuinely hard and the honest answer is unflattering across the whole category.
Changing category, not brand
If you are appending phones to a list of property addresses for outbound calling, the alternative worth evaluating is a bulk homeowner data provider, which differs on three axes that matter more than any feature on a comparison chart:
| Axis | Consumer people-search | Bulk homeowner data |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of work | One profile, viewed in a browser | A file of many thousands of records |
| Who the phone belongs to | A person associated with the address at some point | Matched by name to the current owner of record |
| Compliance posture | Sold for personal use; DNC is your problem afterwards | Licensed for outbound and scrubbed before delivery — see DNC compliance |
How to test the next one properly
Run one sample, not one search. Take five hundred real records from a territory you know, submit the identical set to each candidate, and score two numbers: how many came back with a phone, and how many of those produced a conversation with the right person on the dialer. Those two diverge far more than buyers expect, for reasons we set out in our accuracy guide. Comparing advertised match rates instead is how you end up back on this page in two months.
For the wider field of tools built for volume rather than for individual lookups, start with our skip tracing software guide and bulk skip tracing.
Where Scout Data fits
List Builder is not a people-search product and is not sold per report. It builds homeowner audiences from live property signals — storm exposure, permit activity, roof and system age, ownership change — and delivers them with phones matched by name to the owner of record, scrubbed against the federal do-not-call registry before delivery, with dead numbers replaced. It is licensed for business outbound use, and it is not appropriate for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns Intelius?
Intelius is operated by PeopleConnect, Inc., which was acquired by the private equity firm H.I.G. Capital in 2015 and which also operates TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate, US Search and Classmates. That grouping is the single most useful fact on this page, because it explains why several of the “alternatives” a comparison site recommends are corporate siblings of the product you are leaving.
Are Intelius, Spokeo and BeenVerified the same company?
No — this is a common and understandable mix-up. Intelius is a PeopleConnect brand. BeenVerified is operated by a different company, The Lifetime Value Co. Spokeo is separate from both. They compete in the same category and look alike from the outside, but they are three different vendors with three different contracts.
Will a different people-search site give me better phone numbers?
Marginally at best, and unpredictably. These services draw on overlapping public-record and aggregator sources, so switching brands moves you across presentation and packaging more than substance. A material change in phone quality comes from changing category — to a provider that matches numbers to the owner of record and replaces dead ones — not from changing logo.
